One world record remaining unbroken
For remarkably long in modern sports,
Bob Beamon's 1968 long jump of just over 29 feet,
No other ever even over 28 feet,
Stood alone at the top like Everest,
Just over 29,000 feet, no other peak much over 28,000 feet...
If the high altitude of Mexico City made a difference
How might he have done in the Himalayas?
Or on the Moon, for that matter?
No doubt that Olympic feat would someday be eclipsed as was Mt. Everest
By the discovery of 75,000 foot Martian mountain Olympus Mons,
But it served its time as a giant leap for mankind.
