Marilyn

Dennis Morihara and I

Found ourselves without a destination

When spring break came

We had to leave the dorm

Since they were closing it

For the duration of spring break

We didn't want to stay in L.A.

So we decided to go

Either to my home, New Jersey, or his, Hawaii

We flipped a coin until it came up Hawaii

We waited standby for 19 hours

In L.A. International Airport

Before we finally got seats

On a Honolulu bound jet

While we were waiting

We noticed two nice girls

Directly to our right

Apparently also waiting standby

At one point I heard the seated girl

Call her standing friend "Marilyn"

"Marilyn" then turned and walked

Right past Dennis and myself

Naturally taking a look

I was astonished to see

An uncanny resemblance in this Marilyn

To the only Marilyn I knew as a child in N.J.,

Marilyn Smith

As "Marilyn" passed me

I called to her "Marilyn?"

She stopped, turned, and said "Yes?"

I asked if her name was Marilyn Smith ‑‑‑ it was

Here was the same girl who'd

Come to my early birthday parties

She didn't recognize me at first

As we hadn't seen each other in a few years

And I had let my beard and hair grow

Turns out she and her friend were also going to Hawaii

And they'd flown in to L.A. International from Boston
