Didi Dada
Sitting in Insco programming class
One day in the summer of '73,
When Danny Broussard asked a question
About a rare JCL statement called "DD DATA",
I was suddenly taken back
To when I was a little boy.
Most of us pronounce "data" with a long "a",
But Danny said it like "that" or "hat".
The combination of "dd"
With his pronunciation of "data"
Was what did it ‑‑‑
It sounded exactly the same as "Didi Dada",
The name given to a big exposed tree stump
In a lot on our block
By my childhood companion Howard and me.
Well, it was understandable at this point
That I would think of Howard,
Who I hadn't seen in a few years.
That weekend Harry Sepp and I
Went to play tennis at Ocean County College,
Something we may have done half a dozen times ever.
As we were sitting in the car
Waiting for a court to free up,
A car drove up which we remarked about
Because its license plate was something like "YSP ...",
Just one letter off "ESP",
And Harry and I like to find "ESP" in things.
A minute later the people got out of the car.
One of them was Howard.
